The chances are you’ve heard of a little film this year called Avengers: Infinity War. The $2 billion smash hit is the 19th film in the wildly successful Marvel Cinematic Universe and has been the talk of the summer with its emotional and shocking ending.
After the famous ‘Snap’ when Thanos obtains all infinity stones to wipe out half the universe, most of our heroes literally turn to dust and disappear. It’s a moment 10 years in the making: we are introduced to these incredible heroes who all fail to defeat a villain more powerful than each of them.
The question still remains: how will our favorite heroes come together and reverse the mighty act performed? It is widely understood that Avengers 4 will be a time travel film, acting as a way to resurrect fan favorites and box-office hits like Spider-Man and Black Panther – something almost everyone involved has denied. I’ve come up with a few theories on how this whole can be reversed.
Ant-Man and The Quantum Realm
Since its release in April 2018, we have already had another entry in the MCU with Ant-Man and the Wasp – providing a few more details for what to expect in next year’s summer hit. Paul Rudd returns as Scott Lang and we get a deeper dive into the quantum realm.
The Ant-Man franchise has introduced some unique elements not seen in other entries of the MCU. The quantum realm is described as a reality where all concepts of space and time become irrelevant. It is only accessible through magic energy or extreme shrinking caused by the Pym Particles. Luckily for Scott, Ant-Man can do just that!
The end of Ant-Man and the Wasp sees our hero stuck in the quantum realm as his friends and family vanish due to Thanos’ snap. We can assume that Scott Lang will play a large role in his ability to travel in time to perhaps prevent some of the action from taking place.
Also, we have seen in set photos that leaked last year that Ant-Man appears alongside our original heroes in The Battle of New York. Since he wasn’t Ant-Man in 2012 (or even present at the fight), how was he there now? This supports the idea that Paul Rudd’s character will be the main leader in reuniting our heroes in time and space.
The Strange Behavior of Doctor Strange
Doctor Strange is another character who has shown the audience another aspect of the universe – one that can be vital in saving the planet from Thanos’ reign. When Doctor Strange looks into the future and tells Tony Stark that out of 14 million possible outcomes, Thanos can only be defeated in one, it makes sense that he acted in the way he did.
First, he allowed Star-Lord to ruin the initial plan of removing the gauntlet from Thanos’ hand. With what seemed like a solid idea, why would Doctor Strange allow the plan to fail? Of course, there is also the act of giving Thanos the Time Stone in place of Tony’s life, saying ‘this is the only way’.
However, in his 2016 solo film, The Ancient One says she cannot see into the future past her own death – so how can Doctor Strange see past his death into a universe when Thanos loses? This is either a continuity error or evidence that suggests Doctor Strange isn’t dead and will be a large part of helping Ant-Man out of the Quantum Realm and to victory.
Before his apparent ‘death’ he tells Tony that they’re ‘in the endgame now’, suggesting that they are on the only path that can set them to victory. Doctor Strange seemingly sacrificed his own life, made sure Tony lived, and delayed the snap until Scott Lang was in the Quantum Realm out of Thanos’ reach. That’s some good planning to make sure our characters return!
Pregnant Pepper Potts
The secretary-turned love interest of Tony Stark may not be explicitly key in proof that our favorite characters return, but actress Gwyneth Paltrow certainly has some explaining to do with her recent comments about Pepper and Tony’s story. In an interview promoting the MCU, she describes the journey as
“starting as his dutiful assistant, and then the relationship evolves, and now this decade later they’re married, and they have a child. Their relationship has evolved in all of the ways that great romances evolve.”
Since we’ve never seen Tony and Pepper as husband and wife, let alone parents, this suggests that this duo will have a happy departure from the MCU. Who knows? Perhaps Tony will travel forward in time to meet his future child or save the day just in time to live happily ever after. At the time of writing, we don’t know if Pepper even survived The Snap.
Tony Stark, Leader and Survivor
Robert Downey Jr.’s Tony Stark is the father of the MCU. Kicking off the franchise in 2008 withIron Man, it feels right to have the final battle of this generation lead by Tony Stark himself. There must have been a reason Doctor Strange pleaded with Thanos to spare his life – showing us just how important he is for the ‘end game’.
One rumor is that Tony Stark will make a ‘Thanos-Buster’ capable of apprehending the purple villain. We’ve seen previous versions of larger-than-life body armor in the form of the ‘Hulkbuster’ in 2015’sAvengers: Age of Ultron. Still, will it be powerful enough to defeat someone who can control time, space, and reality?
We know that Thanos is aware of Tony’s abilities, crediting him as the one who derailed the original plan in 2012’s The Avengers – perhaps Tony is the only one truly capable of saving the day and resurrecting our favorite characters. Look at when you consider these set photos:
They show Tony at The Battle of New York but wearing S.H.I.E.L.D gear – does this mean he travels back in time to change some of the past behavior? Or does he infiltrate the original plan and sett the course in another direction?
Tony Stark could prove invaluable in reversing some of the actions we’ve seen over the last 10 years and preventing The Snap from ever taking place. This would make sense, considering he is a self-described genius capable of overcoming many barriers.
Marvel at the Power of Captain Marvel
There is still one more hero we need to meet before next year’s extravaganza – and that’s Captain Marvel herself. So far, we know very little about her in the MCU, other than Nick Fury thought it relevant to call her for help only when half the universe was getting killed. This suggests that she is so powerful, her powers should only be reserved for when things are really serious.
Lead by Brie Larson in her solo outing in early 2018, Captain Marvel will take place in 1990 and introduce us to the character before she joins the wider team. Carol Danvers turns into ‘one of the galaxy’s mightiest heroes after the Earth is caught in the center of an intergalactic conflict between two alien worlds’. That is quite an intense description, showing off some serious power!
There must be a reason why Nick Fury never thought of calling on her help before this moment. As we saw in the post-credits scene, this must be the only thing he thinks is worth calling her for help – something that only she can help fix.
Once her film comes out in March, audiences will have a much better understanding of what she can do and how she will help all the other heroes adjust the timeline and bring them back from the dead.
Are you excited aboutAvengers 4? How do you think all the heroes will return and who do you think will stay dead? Let us know!
