Using VLC for All Media

VLC is an open source video player that’s available for free. The program doesn’t require heavy amounts of hardware and is very user friendly. VLC is also available for nearly every operating system that is currently out on the market. However, there are a few things that you should know about VLC before using it for all of your media.

In order to use VLC for your default media program, you must do a few things before you can securely make it the default program without having any issues.

Remove Windows Media Player with VLC

You must uninstall WMP in order to let wma and wmv files become adopted by the VLC program. These formats will sometimes not convert to the VLC program and can cause annoying issues.

Remove ITunes

Nearly everything that you can play with VLC will not be supported by ITunes, especially mp3’s. Even though the ITunes application has updated their codecs, they mainly focus on apple based codecs to improve the experience on iPhones and Mac’s rather than give out quality codec’s to Windows users. This is a subliminal enticement and most podcasts can be handled by a separate program, which is what ITunes is really useful for.

Remove Hi-End DVD makers

There are some DVD makers that have specific files only associated with that program but also allows another program to share that file. This removes the ability to make VLC the default program for all of the media on your computer.

Run a Malware scan

Malware sometimes embeds itself into the media files on your computer and not the harmful malware you may think but media player software malware. This malware prevents any other media player from changing the default program. This became notorious when Real Player did this with their media when they first had their big launch and it cause a lot of problems because it only happened with some of the programs, so Real Player wasn’t found at fault for the issues.

Install VLC

Now that there’s nothing there to prevent you from switching all of your media of to VLC, now you should install the program. Once downloaded, you can then click on all the plugins to add VLC into your browser to also replace WMP whenever you go to sites that only support WMP playback because VLC can mimic it.
