These Dogs Aren’t Meant For Your Home
Dogs truly are a man’s best friend. They become part of families and love their owners unconditionally no matter what. Despite dogs being considered the most domesticated of pets, initially the canines were not meant for this purpose.

There are between 200 to 300 dog breeds and although they originated from the same ancestor, specific breeds evolved in different ways which made them unsuitable for a domestic atmosphere. You may be surprised that your beloved pooch is on this list.
Chow Chow
Chow Chows are a Chinese dog and the breed dates back thousands of years. They are known for their big, fluffy coats, almost making them bear-like. Despite looking cute and cuddly, they are known as one of the most aggressive breeds out there.

They are extremely territorial dogs and highly protective over their owners and space which is why outsiders may not get the best of greetings. They have the ability to act dangerously to other dogs and strangers.
Siberian Husky
Siberian Huskies are synonymous with Alaska and the snowy conditions there, but they actually came from Asia initially due to its cold and somewhat intense environments. Although they are good with children for the most part, if they become restless inside they can become quite destructive.

Huskies need to be around people or other dogs most of the time and they love to explore outside the home so make sure you keep them on a tight leash if you don’t want to lose them.
French Bulldog
The French Bulldog has become one of the most popular breeds in recent years due to their small size, adorable appearance and beautiful coats. Nonetheless, this breed is also increasingly susceptible to all kinds of diseases and health issues due to overheating, so they need to be kept cool.

They are a breed of dog that need constant attention and get separation anxiety so they can’t be left alone for too long. Lastly, they don’t do well with flying and get severe breathing problems on planes.
Dalmatian
After the Disney film 101 Dalmations came out in the 90s, this breed became the most sought after of them all. Their coats are covered in black spots and they are easily recognizable.

However, they tend to have really bad hearing so are not the most domesticated, their deafness can be near impossible to train them successfully. They are also super energetic dogs and love being in the outdoors so need long walks to keep them occupied or they can become aggressive.
Shih Tzu
Another chinese dog that is very popular to have as a pet is the Shih Tzu. Although this breed loves to be indoors, they can be very hard to train meaning that your home will become a complete mess until they are fully trained, which can take some time.

They are a breed that have breathing problems so they often develop health issues. They often make raspy sounds as they struggle to breathe out of their short snout.
Australian Shepherd
Despite having Australia in its name, this is a misconception and it was actually bred in the United States many years ago. They are very outdoorsy dogs and need a lot of exercise and attention.

They are not a dog that wants to sit at home and sleep and their owners must have spare time to keep them occupied. If these dogs become restless they can take it out on your home and proceed to break and destroy things.
Jack Russell Terrier
Jack Russell’s might seem like some of the most domesticated dogs, and they do have plenty of benefits, but there are some things that owners of this breed need to be aware of.

They are a high-energy breed and really need to get a substantial amount of exercise each day. In some cases, Jack Russell’s can have problems bonding with children and can act out if they don’t like something. Of course, training them helps a lot, but these are things to keep in mind.
Greyhound
These European dogs have a long and streamlined appearance and extremely long legs which makes them ideal for racing. They are some of the fastest dogs and need to run a lot to tire them out.

While they can be well behaved in the home, they can be very difficult to take on walks, often running off and can jump over fences quite easily and in some cities they have to be kept on a leash at all times. Greyhounds typically don’t on too well with other dogs, specifically small dogs.
Pekingese
Pekingese are small Chinese dogs that tend to do very well in the house, but there is a big drawback to the cute, fluffy canines. The Pekingese are prone to having emotional and physical trauma.

A house with stairs can be harmful to these dogs as they have difficulty getting up them and can fall down and injure themselves. They are also a breed that suffer from breathing problems which can flare up when they exercise or roughhouse too much.
Pit Bull
Any Pit Bull owner will say their there is a misconception about these dogs and they are the calmest, sweetest and most gentle dogs. However, there is a reason they are banned in some places as they can be extremely dangerous to both other dogs and people.

They are very powerful dogs and have been known to attack quite unexpectedly. If this happens, owners can be held liable for their dogs. They are high energy dogs and require plenty of exercise.
Shar-Pei
Shar-Pei’s can be traced back to China and have a shared history with the Chow Chow. These dogs were crossbred early on, making them have very similar characteristics. In ancient times, they were trained to be guard dogs and this protective nature is something they carry to this day.

If they aren’t socialized as puppies, they don’t mix well with humans and get territorial or aggressive if approached. To avoid this, it’s important they are socialized and trained as a puppy.
German Shepherd
German Shepherd’s date back to the 1800s and were intended to be a herding dog for sheep. They are one of the smartest dog breeds and have been used in many different occupations from police forces to acting.

However, German Shepherds have also been used as aggressive and dangerous guard dogs. They were heavily used by the Germans in the second world war and developed a bad reputation from then. They must be socialized properly when they are puppies.
Basenji
These African dogs are known for the distinct yodeling sound it makes, instead of barking like other dogs. They were originally used as hunting dogs and still have the desire to hunt meaning other small pets and cats should be kept away from them.

They’re one of the hardest breeds of dogs to train. They are very active and can jump very high meaning they can quite easily clear the fence in your backyard. They do better with one owner instead of being in a family.
Doberman Pinscher
Doberman Pinschers are highly intelligent dogs, but they can also be incredibly dangerous and intimidating dogs. Even their appearance shows they are not a breed to be messed with.

They are trained to be guard dogs and are extremely loyal to their owners, but potentially a huge danger to others. Visitors can only be safe if the primary owner is present and need to be walked a lot to keep their aggression at bay. They can also be difficult with children.
Caucasian Ovcharka
Most commonly known as the Caucasian Shepherd Dog, these dogs were mostly bred in Georgia. They are generally calm and low-energy breed but can switch their personality if someone they don’t know enters the home.

They’re not a sociable dog and do not do well with other dogs from any other breed. If you have a home where people are in and out a lot, this dog would not adapt well to that environment. They can have health issues and are prone to obesity so need exercise.
Tosa
The Tosa is the only dog breed still used for legal dog fighting in Japan. These dogs are bred to fight which has made them increasingly dangerous dogs. Due to this reputation, several countries including Denmark, the United Kingdom, Australia, and Germany have banned breeding them.

These dogs are mistreated and abused as they are kept in cages to stay aggressive for their fights. It is a serious issue in Japan and many animal protection organizations have campaigned to ban it.
Afghan Hound
The Afghan Hound has beautiful long hair which is its most prominent feature. They adapted to their native Afghanistan mountains with their long coats to stay warm in the freezing climate. This breed needs constant exercise to stay healthy and to not act out.

Although they are good family dogs, they require a lot of maintenance and need to be trained to stay in line. Unless they have a relationship with children, they should be kept away for the most part.
Skye Terrier
Skye Terriers are a feisty breed of dog, despite their small size. They need daily exercise and even when indoors they have to keep moving. They originated from the U.K and are actually endangered in their native country.

Their hair needs to be maintained by their owners as it can get tangled and big knots can form. Skye Terriers have a tendency to attack and kill smaller pets and can be aggressive to outsiders. They can be good family pets if they are trained properly.
Great Pyrenees
The Great Pyrenees was originally intended to be a shepherd dog in many different parts of Europe. Their large size and thick coat makes them perfect for the outdoors and they can easily cope in snowy conditions.

These dogs protect those around them whether it be adults or children however the drawbacks are that they require a lot of grooming and may drool around the house. These dogs can overheat easily and in this case they will sleep for hours on end.
Rottweiler
The Rottweiler is a very territorial dog and in some cases it can be aggressive if it hasn’t had the correct training. They are a very strong breed of dog but this can be dangerous in a vulnerable setting.

However, if they are socialized from a young age they can be good with families and children. In many cases, rottweilers have been used as guard dogs in the home and will be fiercely protective of their owners, just make sure they don’t assert themselves!
St. Bernard
St. Bernards are a huge breed of dog that can be super friendly to both adults and children. They originate from Italy and Switzerland and have been included in many books and movies over the years.

However, their great size makes them very difficult to keep inside and have enough room to move around. Despite being very friendly dogs, they can often knock over young children without intention. St. Bernards have been used as guard and rescue dogs in the past.
Great Dane
The Great Dane is one of the largest dog breeds in the world, so it’s quite surprising that they are known to be one of the friendliest. For years they were used as hunting dogs and even popular dogs to have in the home.

They are loving dogs, but having them in your home can be a general hazard for young children and many of your belongings. They need to be properly exercised and they require a lot of care.
Wolfdog
The Wolfdog is a hybrid breed, mixing wolves with dogs. Generally, they are really healthy dogs and have fewer health problems that most breeds. However, there has been plenty of controversy surrounding these dogs and there are some cities that have banned the breeds due to them being deemed dangerous.

Around 40 states have banned breeding and owning them so it’s rare that you will ever see one in a home, and if you do, stay back as their behavior can be unpredictable.
Dogo Argentino
The Dogo Argentino’s were first bred in Argentina to be hunting and guard dogs and due to this nature, they have been banned in many different countries. While they can be protective and loving of their families, their behavior can also be highly unpredictable and destructive if they are not watched over.

They are useful dogs in the workforce as police dogs, guide dogs or guard dogs and service dogs. They can easily get restless if they aren’t doing anything.
Cane Corso
Cane Corso’s are great with their own family and can act as loving, protective dogs, but the same can’t be said for other people they come into contact with.

They are known to chase other animals and show their hostile side towards strangers who come into their territory. On the other hand, they make excellent guard dogs and will often alert their owners if they suspect something suspicious. These dogs need to be socialized early on in their lives.
Bull Terrier
Bull Terriers have often been portrayed in TV and movies as dangerous dogs which has given them a bad reputation. While they can be aggressive dogs, it predominantly depends on their socialization how their temperament is.

Traditionally, the Bull Terrier was involved in blood sports and hunting so they have dangerous elements in their DNA but they can be great with families and kids if they are raised correctly. Unfortunately, a lot of the Bull Terrier’s suffer from deafness.
Perro de Presa Canario
The Perro de Presa Canario is a Spanish dog that originates from the Canary Islands but in English, they are known as the Canary Mastiff. This breed is known for misbehaving and can be aggressive if they’re not trained from puppies.

In some cultures, they have been trained to fight other dogs due to their size and power and the outcome can be tragic. These dogs can also be easily provoked by small animals as they think they are prey.
Chihuahua
Don’t be fooled by their tiny size, Chihuahua’s can be one of the most aggressive dog breeds. Chihuahuas become fiercely protective of their owners but this can come at the expense of others who they lash out on when they come near.

Although this is quite rare, when they do want to attack they can’t actually do much damage. However, the exception comes from small children and they can get hurt if the chihuahua feels threatened in the house.
Rhodesian Ridgeback
Also known as the African Lion Hound, the South African native dog is known to keep lions away from its owner while hunting. It’s protective nature means that these dogs aren’t friendly to strangers and can be quite aggressive.

They have traits that could make them a dangerous dog but if they are socialized properly and from a young age they can be fiercely protective dog of your family and your home. However, they are a high maintenance and require a lot of exercise and tend to bore easily.
Border Collie
The border collie is one of the most intelligent dog breeds but they are also one of the most active dog breeds. These dogs require plenty of exercise and attention and are a difficult dog for people who don’t have time for them.

Border collies need both mental and physical stimulation in order to feel excited and happy. Their need for constant attention and need to keep busy can make them a difficult dog to keep in the house.
Fila Brasileiro
Fila Brasileiro dogs were originally bred to help their owners catch animals of all different sizes. They do this by chasing animals and getting them into a vulnerable position which is when their owner will come over and catch them.

This teamwork makes them extremely possessive over their owners and don’t do well with new people. They are bred to be hostile dogs and it is difficult to train them when they have previously displayed this behavior to others.
Bullmastiff
Bullmastiffs are a cross between a bulldog and mastiff. Typically, these dogs weigh around 130 pounds and they can jump on people, so it can be dangerous if they jump on young children.

On the other hand, they are great guard dogs as it comes naturally to them but socializing them and making them display good behavior in the home needs to be trained. In general, bullmastiffs have a shorter life span than most other dogs, living on average just eight years.
Boerboel
The boerboel originates from South Africa and is one of the strongest dog breeds out there. Traditionally, they were farm dogs and trained to work for their masters. In addition, they are good family dogs and tend to socialize well with children.

The greatest problem with the boerboel is that they are clingy dogs and want to be with their owners all the time and follow them everywhere. They can easily become lonely and depressed and can be aggressive to others.
Catahoula Leopard Dog
The catahoula leopard dog is Louisiana’s state dog and is named after the Catahoula Parish in the state. Unlike other dogs, this breed have webbed feet, making them great swimmers and good hunters in marshes.

In most of these dogs, they have spotted coats, but there are some that have no spots at all. Unfortunately, this breed have a high chance of being born blind, deaf or both. They tend to be quite aggressive to dogs they don’t know but this can be changed with training.
Bernese Mountain Dog
Bernese mountain dogs originate from the Swedish alps and they were an import from Rome. Sadly, they have the shortest life span of all breeds, only living until seven to eight years old.

They have been used as farm dogs and also in pulling carts for their owners. They are meant for the outdoors but can adapt well to home life. However, they need plenty of exercise as they are such a large dog and need a lot of space to run around in.
Affenpinscher
This dog is also known as the Monkey Terrier and is a German breed. Despite their small size, they are confident and playful and are extremely protective over their owners.

However, they are a difficult dog to breed and owners who aren’t used to working with and training dogs shouldn’t bring one into their home. They are not good with children and can be territorial so can attack if they are provoked. They have an average lifespan of around 11 years.
Belgian Malinois
Also known as the Belgian shepherd, this breed are often used by police forces and have even been trained to work in The White House. They are very obedient dogs and easy to train but this makes them difficult to have in the home as they are so accustomed to working.

They are big, energetic dogs and need a lot of exercise to stay stimulated. If they don’t get enough attention or exercise they can start destroying things.
Gull Dong
The gull dong is a dog breed originating from India and Pakistan and is also known as the Pakistani Bull Dog. It is a cross between the gull terrier and the bully kutta.

This breed is known to be extremely strong and powerful and due to this, they were bred to be fighting dogs as they are aggressive and very difficult to control. In addition to fighting, they have also been used for hunting and guarding. They have been banned in New York.
Weimaraner
The Weimaraner is predominantly a hunting dog and is prone to chasing and killing other animals. They are big dogs that need to be exercised a lot and fed enough to keep up with this. Despite being hunting dogs, they are quite needy of their owners and can suffer from separation anxiety.

If a Weimaraner is left home alone without their owner for too long they will often bark, howl and proceed to tear belongings up. They need to be really well trained to be sociable dogs.
