America doesn’t have a Royal Family, but if it did have a leading monarch, it would probably be in the form of a Kardashian. The augmented, tanned, and siliconed reality TV family first appeared on television screens in 2007 and 15 seasons later shows no signs of slowing down.
Today, members of America’s Royals are worth hundreds of millions and meeting the country’s president – just how did we get here? This article seeks to explain some of the unknown facts about the Kardashians and how they got to where they are today.
We Didn’t Learn About Khloe’s Pregnancy When She Did
It was a big moment when Khloe Kardashian revealed her pregnancy on screen in January 2018. She had actually found out she was pregnant in September 2017 and was publically confirmed in December.
By the time viewers saw the big moment on screen, it was revealed that Khloe knew about the impending baby before cameras started rolling. The scene was filmed after the BBQ reveal announcement as a way to incorporate more continuity into the series.
Many Scenes With Kris Humphries Were Reshot Or Rehearsed
Before the world was blessed with Kim and Kanye, Kim Kardashian was briefly married to Kris Humphries – in a televised wedding episode that holds the show’s highest-ever rating.
According to court documents obtained during their divorce trial, the show’s producer, Russell Jay, had to admit that at least two scenes pertaining to their relationship were reshot or scheduled. Sources say that Kim didn’t like her facial reaction to some news and asked to film the moment again – now that’s good insurances against a bad look!.
‘Keeping Up With The Kardashians’ Wasn’t Its Original Name
The show aired its first episode on October 14, 2007 – forever changing the landscape of American reality TV and culture. Beforehand, however, producers were unsure what to call the iconic show. Original titles included Kardashians: Krazy With A K and Living Kardashian.
Apparently, when one of the producers failed to come up with a title for the show in a meeting, her excuse was that she was “too busy keeping up with the Kardashians”. The name immediately stuck and the rest was history.
Who Came Up With The Show?
In The Secrets of My Life, Caitlyn Jenner explains the story of how the family got their break into the reality TV industry. Jenner wrote, “The house is awash in puberty and adolescence and young adulthood and two parents with very different styles.
It seems to me something is there for television.” Later, Caitlyn explained that it was Kris that was banking on a meeting with Ryan Seacrest about the show – which she originally called ‘absurd’. E! originally passed on the series before changing their mind.
Kylie’s Embarrassment Peaked In Season 1
Kylie Jenner’s most embarrassing moment in the entire 15-season run occurred in the very first season of Keeping Up With The Kardashians when she danced on the stripper pole.
Being only 10 years old at the time, she admits she ‘literally can’t even’ every time she watches it back, which is apparently quite a lot. It’s a good thing she peaked so early: she hasn’t been embarrassed since that moment despite growing up on television and watched by millions of people each week.
Kim Started Her Career As An Assistant
Kim Kardashian started her career as a friend of Paris Hilton and make-up stylist for Lindsey Lohan. Using the skill of her brush, she would work along these celebrities before rising to fame in her own right with a legitimate sex tape.
It is rumored the tape was leaked by her own mother, Kris, as a way to quickly rise to fame. There was no insurance policy against this technique so it’s lucky it paid off.
Kourtney Used To Kry
Even though Kylie jumped at the chance to be in front of the camera from a young age, it was her sister Kourtney who held some reservations about being on the show. According to Kris, the eldest Kardashian was the only skeptical family member to be cautious about signing away their personal lives for a decade.
Kourtney explains: “I remember in season one being like, ‘I have to go to the bathroom,’ and I’d cry in there as quietly as I could because I was still mic’d. I never want to cry in front of cameras.” Good policy, Kourtney!
Khloe Never Wanted A Spin-off
Between 2011 and 2012, fans were treated to a spin-off of the show called Khloe and Lamar, which aired for two seasons. The show highlighted the romance and marriage of Khloe Kardashian and Lamar Odom. “I never wanted to do Khloe and Lamar; my ex-husband did,” Khloe said.
“He has his career, but he really fought for it. I said, ‘You have to go into E! and promise them that you have the time.'” They canceled the show and she filed for divorce the following year in 2013.
The Exterior Shots Weren’t Their Homes… At First
For the first few seasons, the exterior shots of the Kardashians’ home were replaced with other houses, with Kim claiming it was for security and insurance reasons. The ‘Jenner house’ was actually located around 20 miles from where filming took place.
It went on sale in 2014 and sold for $6.25m. Ironically, as they got more famous and in-demand, they decided to use their actual homes for exterior shots in later seasons – although these are filmed from the back of the building.
They Love Marriage
The Kardashians are known to enjoy marriage – they’re dedicated to doing it as much as they can. Kim was first married at the age of 19 to Damon Thomas, a music producer.
After 4 years they divorced and she famously married Kris Humphries in 2011 for 72 days. Since 2014, she’s been married to Kanye West. Kris has also been married twice and Khloe divorced in 2016. We wonder what their prenup policy is?
Kris Jenner Admitted Her Doorbell Is The Theme Song
The opening credits have evolved almost as much as the faces and genders of the Kardashian family. In a 2011 interview, Kris laughed at the fact that her doorbell is actually the whistled song from the very first season.
Of course, much has changed since that original opening: babies have been born, faces have been lifted, and genders have been swapped. Today, it only shows the immediate and female members of the family.
No Plans On A ‘Kimye’ Spin-Off
Despite being one of the most famous couples in America, don’t bank on a spin-off show any time soon. Kanye West has remained adamant to maintain his own career and presence outside the show that made his wife, Kim, so famous.
Despite this, he has been known to randomly show up during filming to make the occasional appearance. Conversely, Kim says she prefers to speak for herself on the show. According to Kris, “Kanye does not have the time or have any desire that I know of to do a show like that.”
They’re Worth A Lot
In 2017, the Kardashian family signed a whopping $150 million contract to keep the show alive after 14 seasons. The contact promises there will be five more seasons of the show, meaning the family will rake in $30 million per season until 2023.
Kourtney, Kim, and Khloe will split 50% of the total sum whereas Kris will collect a 10% management fee. So let’s hope you’re not too sick of the family: they’re set to be on our screens and part of our culture for a few more years yet.
The Original Intention Was To Sell Clothes
No one could have predicted that Keeping Up With The Kardashians would become the cultural icon it is today. Despite all this, the massive ratings and worldwide fame wasn’t always the main goal.
Originally, Kris admitted that the intention was to bring business to their clothing stores, the now-defunct Dash and Smooch. Since the show blew up, they have created more brands and achieved massive success outside of the show and around the world.
The Show Spawned 10 Spin-offs
The massive success of the original show has led to many (and we mean MANY) spin-offs. Some were more successful than others, but all left a huge impact.
To date, there has been: Kourtney and Kim Take Miami, Kourtney and Kim Take New York, Khloé & Lamar, Sex With Brody, Kourtney and Khloé Take The Hamptons, Dash Dolls, I Am Cait, Revenge Body With Khloe Kardashian, Rob & Chyna, and Life of Kylie. How many of these have you seen?
Kim Blow Dries Metal
Is there anything more traumatic than wrapping a cold ring around your finger? The mild and temporary inconvenience is almost too much to handle for Kim Kardashian.
Thankfully, she has overcome this daily challenge by blowdrying her rings and necklace prior to applying them on to her body. This way, she avoids the few seconds of cold texture touching her skin. It’s considered a policy in the Kardashian home – genius!
The Hidden Kardashian
The youngest of the OG Kardashian clan, Rob, has been known to avoid the spotlight – unlike his sisters. The only brother of the Kardashian family has famously (no pun intended) avoided the tabloid press and extravagant events – even skipping Kim’s wedding due to anxiety.
He is currently working on combatting unhealthy eating habits and recovering from his toxic relationship with Blac Chyna.
