Stunt doubles are the real heroes of our favorite films. After all, an actor can only do so much. What with the impressive acting range possible, it would be unreasonable to think they can also jump out of a plane.
The truth is: not all actors are Tom Cruise. But more on that later.
Here, we’ve highlighted some of our favourite actors when they are photographed with their less-famous stunt doubles. For some, they’re the true action stars of these films! This list might have you looking twice…
Bruce Willis doesn’t have just one: he has multiple stunt doubles! The 64-year-old Die Hard star often works with Stuart Wilson. Wilson is considered a veteran daredevil in the industry. As well as one of Willis’ stunt doubles, he is also a stunt coordinator and fight choreographer.
Wilson once said this about his work as a stunt double: “If you pull off a stunt that’s really dangerous or really technical… and it comes out right and everybody loves it, for 20 seconds you’re somebody. And then you go back to obscurity again,” Wilson commented on his work.”
Speaking of Justice League, let’s meet Alicia Vela-Bailey. This particular double helped Gal Gadot reach international acclaim as Wonder Woman in both films in 2017. She worked on some of the most daring stunts – and was even pregnant during some of the filming!
Vera-Bailey is one of the more seasoned stunt doubles in Hollywood, known for her diverse abilities. She has also worked on films including Avatar, the world’s highest-grossing film (to date). Yet, you wouldn’t recognize her on the street!
Do you remember Penelope Cruz’ performance in 2016’s Zoolander 2? No? Well, that’s because absolutely no one remembers that film. Aside from the fact that it was deemed offensive and outdated, the performances were never really considered anything great.
Well, one advantage of being a stunt double is that no one will remember a bad performance! Cruz had one of the strangest stunt doubles we’ve seen on this list: a bearded man! He performed some of the motorcycle scenes. Did you see him?
According to sources close to the production, Game of Thrones star Emilia Clark had a stunt double for a whole six weeks when the show filmed in Spain! For a brief period, the Mother of Dragons was played by Rosie Mac – and we bet you didn’t even notice!
Mac has described her time on the HBO hit series: “That same day I posted a selfie on Twitter, and I was wearing long, blonde hair. A while later I was asked by one of the agencies I am signed with to send in my body measurements, but they didn’t tell me what for.” She only found out later that she would be doubling up for Daenerys.
Anyone who has seen a Quentin Tarantino film can confirm that actress Uma Thurman can kick some serious butt! No other example is as good as her time as The Bride in Kill Bill 1 and 2. But did she perform all the stunts herself?
Well, truthfully Thurman left some of the biggest stunts to one of her stunt doubles, Zoe Bell. This New Zealander is well-versed as a stuntman and was so impressive that Tarantino made her the star of Death Proof!
Before Zoe Bell made her mark in Kill Bill, she was busy working as the stunt double for another hero – Xena! That’s right, Bell has also been the double for Lucy Lawless, star of Xena: Warrior Princess.
Bell has opened up about her experience as one of Hollywood’s greatest stunt doubles: “I’ve physically kicked so many men’s asses and I can totally feel proud of that. But what I’m recognizing with age is my vulnerability is a source of strength, which seems so ironic.”
She may seem like the charming midwesterner today, but once upon a time Garner used to kick some serious ass! Garner’s primary stunt double is a lady called Shauna Duggins, who has been alongside the actress for many years.
Starting in Alias, Garner went on to work with Duggins in films like Daredevil, Elektra, and eben 13 Going on 30. Duggins was the first stuntwoman ever nominated for an Emmy for Outstanding Stunt Coordination. They remain good friends to this day!
Megan Fox made quite an impact during her time as a sex symbol in the Transformers series. Well, fans may not be surprised to know that most of the onscreen stunts were performed by her stunt double, Stacey Carino. And by the sounds of it, this isn’t a girl you’re going to want to mess with!
Carino once broke her neck during a stunt – but only found out years later! She recalls the incident: “I know exactly when I did that, but I didn’t realize it was broken. I thought you were paralyzed when you broke your neck!”
There were a few different stunt doubles in 2010’s Black Swan, but Natalie Portman only used one! Meet Sarah Lane, one of the most controversial stunt doubles in the industry! What makes her inclusion so prolific?
Well, after the film hit cinemas, there were accusations that Natalie Portman didn’t perform enough of the dance moves in the film to warrant her Oscar win for best Female Performance. Don’t worry, the filmmakers made sure everyone got the credit they deserved!
One of the biggest advantages for filmmakers is when superheroes wear masks – making it easy to use stunt doubles! Even though actors usually don’t like having their faces covered, Reynolds’ personality and acting shines through with his portrayal of Deadpool!
Actor Ryan Reynolds uses the talented Alex Kyshkovych as his stunt double after sustaining an injury off screen in real life. The actor doesn’t perform any of his own stunts, but it doesn’t matter if the character is always in costume!
Can you spot the real Zoe Saldana? This spooky image shows us just how much makeup can help in making actors look like their stunt doubles. Here is Saldana (left) posing with her doubles on the set of Guardians of the Galaxy.
The future of Saldana’s character is currently unknown, but it’s understood she will be joining the rest of the cast for the third installment of the popular franchise. If that’s the case, we can expect to see more funny pictures like this one!
You don’t become Han Solo AND Indiana Jones without relying on a few stunt doubles over the years! Here we can see a cool photo of Harrison Ford with his double, Vic Armstrong. As a stuntman, he worked on three Indiana Jones films and even played one of the Nazi soldiers in Raiders of the Lost Ark.
Armstrong would famously break from Ford for the fifth Indiana Jones, due to a scheduling conflict. Now working as a stunt coordinator, he was working on The Mummy: Tomb of the Dragon Emperor.
Ian McKellen played Magneto and Galdalf on the big screen, making him the perfect candidate for multiple stunt doubles! Here’s an awesome image of the actor appearing alongside two of them during the production of Lord of the Rings.
As you can see, one of his doubles is much larger than the other two! This is because there were many scenes where Gandalf had to look much bigger than the smaller hobbits with who he would often share the screen.
Even former WWE wrestlers need doubles sometimes! Here we can see a great photo of Guardians of the Galaxy’s Drax alongside the stunt double used for a few scenes. His brought a unique style and character to the role.
Talking about Drax, Dave Bautista said: “I can just relate to Drax so much it’s not even funny. Just the simple things that we have in common. Simple things like the tattoos, the tragedy—because, you know, I had a bit of tragedy in my life as well. So it’s really easy for me to pull from that.”
It’s not only adults who rely on stunt doubles! The Walking Dead’s Chandler Riggs, who played Karl, was also guilty of having someone else perform some of the more dangerous stunts on the show. Here’s a picture of the two of them hanging out in between takes.
During his time on the show, Riggs earned acclaim for his portrayal of the character in the zombie show. He even won many awards, including Saturn awards for Best Performer by a Younger Actor.
It turns out that being a body double isn’t always what it’s cracked up to be – just ask Phil Ball! This stunt double has worked alongside Pitt for many of his films and has often joked about some of the more demanding elements of his job on social media.
“Just when I thought my day job couldn’t get any more bizarre, I’m made to shave my hands,” Ball once tweeted. We thought all the jumping out of planes would be bizarre enough!
It turns out that the God of Thunder is also the God of Mischief – at least when it comes to tricking audiences! Bobby Holland Hanton has been Chris Hemsworth’s body double for all three Thor films, and has quite a few stories to share!
“I’ve also snapped my groin clean off the bone and blew my shoulder out, and during Mission Impossible I popped my rib out on set. It’s fair to say I’ve had my fair share of injuries…” Ouch!
Henry Cavill’s time as Superman was controversial, to say the least. Despite the mixed reviews of his three outings, one thing was certain: the man is pretty impressive at fighting! For most of the scenes, it was Cavill – but even Superman needs a stunt double.
Meet Adrian McGaw. McGaw is Cavill’s stunt double for more than one film – making him somewhat of a doppelganger. Aside from donning the cape for Justice League, McGaw also doubled up for the star in 2018’s Mission Impossible: Fallout.
Here’s a charming photo of Karen Gillan, who stars in the surprisingly popular Jumanji reboot from 2017. She’s posing with two of her stunt doubles – can you spot the real actress? It can be hard to tell them apart!
The Scottish actress starred as Martha in the reboot and is also kicking butt in the Marvel Cinematic Universe as Nebula, Gamora’s sister in Guardians of the Galaxy. It looks like this action star knows a thing about looking hardcore on set!
Even though Ronda Rousey is an MMA Fighter and champion in her own right, it doesn’t mean she isn’t immune from stunt doubles! If you don’t want to mess with Rousey, then you should definitely stay away from her double – Caitlin Dechelle.
Dechelle has fought against other fighting heroes, such as Jackie Chan. Notably, Caitlin Dechelle stepped in for Ronda Rousey during the 2015 hit Furious 7. These two look so similar it’s hard to tell them apart. Can you do it?
Just because stunt doubles are supposed to look like the person they’re imitating, it doesn’t mean they have to be the same gender. Just look at this guy: all dressed up with a charming wig and braids, he’s all set to step in for Lopez.
These two were snapped together during the production of her Follow The Leader music video. It was filmed in Mexico and she is seen using a male body double. If you can’t tell the difference, then he’s doing a good job!
She may have ventured into action films every now and then, but don’t let that fool you. Angelina Jolie admits to using a stunt double for her performance in Salt. If you thought stunt doubles just worked physically, well then you would be wrong.
Jolie’s double, Carleton, said this: “If the actress is leaner than you, then you know you have to drop some weight. When I was doubling for Angelina Jolie on Salt, I was hungry for three months! Actresses also have to drop weight for their roles, too. It’s part of the business.”
Michael J. Fox
No, these aren’t different Marty McFlys from multiple points in time! Here is Michael J. Fox next to three of his stunt doubles on the set of Back To The Future. When you have to perform so many stunts, it makes sense to have a team.
If you look closely, you’ll spot Charlie Croughwell on the far right. He’s the double that most closely represents Fox. In fact, these two developed such a bond that he went on to be his double in many other movies after this.
Dwayne ‘The Rock’ Johnson
That’s right: even The Rock needs stunt doubles. If you’re thinking that no one could match the incredible DNA of Johnson, then you’d be right. His double is none other than Tanoai Reed – his first cousin!
Johnson and Reed have been doubling up together ever since Johnson’s first feature film, The Scorpion King in 2002. Since then, he’s appeared in most of his films – including the popular Fast and Furious franchise. We would love to see them act on screen together!
Chris Pratt has one of the most impressive Hollywood stories. After being the fat friend for years, he became a bonafide hunk and leading man after shedding 50 pounds for films like Guardians of the Galaxy and Jurassic World. Here is Pratt with his double, Tony McFarr, on the set of Jurassic World: Fallen Kingdom.
These two were first introduced in 2014 during the filming of the first Jurassic World. Since then, they’ve worked on films like Passengers.
Here’s another Marvel superhero who relied on her fair share of stunt doubles. Scarlett Johansson works with Heidi Moneymaker to perform some of those more difficult scenes we’ve seen in the MCU.
It turns out that Moneymaker has had quite the career. She has an amazing 74 acting credits to her name. The actress has confessed that her biggest fear is sitting behind a desk all day. Not as scary as jumping out of planes, if you ask us!
You can ask Johnny Depp and he’ll be pretty honest: he doesn’t like performing stunts! He’s happy to film the close-ups but then have a more seasoned professional do the hard stuff. Well, it’s a good thing he has stunt doubles for his films!
Apparently, one of his doubles almost got seriously injured on the set of Pirates of the Caribbean. “Simple things in Westerns are incredibly dangerous. I have such respect for the actors and stuntmen and directors,” he said.
Being a stunt double is a thankless job in the eye of public perception – but it can still be annoying to see your actor double take the credit! Olivia Munn got in a little bit of trouble when she claimed to perform all her own stunts.
Well, this photo would prove otherwise! Here she is posing with her double, Julia Rekaikyna. Turns out you might not want to pose for photos with your double if you’re going to pretend to do it all yourself!
Here’s another behind the scenes look at Star Wars with none other than Princess Leia herself! Meet Tracey Eddon – the stunt double for none other than Carrie Fisher. This photo shows them bonding in between takes on Return of the Jedi.
There was one scene where Fisher refused the services of Eddon – killing Jabba! Apparently, she was offered the chance to sit it out, but the actress wanted to be the one to do it herself! That must be why she became a General later!
Game of Thrones
We know that Brienne of Tarth and The Hound are pretty hardcore characters – but what about the actors? Turns out that we all need a little help looking intimidating sometimes! We wouldn’t want to be on the wrong side of two of them – let alone four!
This particular photo was taken after a huge fight between The Hound and Brienne at the end of season four. It turns out they were all good friends off-camera – thank goodness!
We’re back looking at Wonder Woman! This time we’re taking a few steps back to the 1970s with Lynda Carter and her double, Jeannie Epper. This photo was taken on the set of the iconic television series.
According to sources, Epper only received around $250 a day for her work on the show. A far cry from the salary of some of the main stars. It’s not much when you consider she was jumping off buildings and getting hit by cars!
We’ve already seen how stunt doubles can be different genders – but what about ages? Here, we can see Quvenzhané Wallis with her double on the set of Annie. The 2014 film re-introduced the singing orphan to a brand new audience.
Even though Wallis was only 10 years old during filming, we can see her double is much older! As long as she can run and dance the way she needs to, who cares how old she is? We think this photo is great!
Some stunt doubles resemble their actor doubles more closely than others. No more true example is with Mark Ruffalo and Anthony Molinari. We had to have a double take here to make sure we knew who we were looking at!
Molinari has also been a stunt double for actors like Jeremy Renner and George Clooney. However, we think these two are destined to be partnered for the next few years. Here they are on the set of one of Ruffalo’s films.
Of course, the God of Mischief would use doubles to try and trick us! Here is Tom Hiddleston on the set of one of the Avengers films. Fully dressed as Loki, he is taking a cheeky selfie with two of his doubles in between takes.
Hiddleston tries to do as many of his own stunts as possible. However, Marvel films are big operations and require professionals to step in every so often. These guys will probably reunite for the new Disney+ show, Loki.
Tom Hardy’s stunt double had no problem fitting in on the set of The Dark Knight Rises. Since his face was covered the whole time and his voice was manipulated it was easy to slip in the stunt double when no one was looking!
Since this guy was probably a fraction of the price of Hardy, perhaps they should have just kept him as the whole part? Either way, here’s a photo of the two of them bonding (without their masks).
If you don’t remember most of The Amazing Spider-Man 2, we wouldn’t blame you. The 2014 film was a bit of a critical miss that caused the franchise to reboot and head over to Marvel Studios. We can’t fault the talent of the actors, nor can we criticize the hard work from his stunt doubles!
Here’s an ‘amazing’ shot of two Spideys together filming an action scene together. It’s a shame this franchise couldn’t pay off a lot of their setups, but we’re happy with Peter Parker’s new home!
We all know about the Batfleck and the actor’s time as Batman. Even though that has come to an end earlier than we had all hoped, we can still enjoy the pictures of the Hollywood star and his stunt doubles!
This WASN’T taken on the Batman set, since we can see his face! Affleck and his double were photographed here on a new film – marking the fifth time they have worked together. He doesn’t have the same youthful glow as Affleck, but we bet he has the chops!
…Speaking of Batman! Twilight alum Robert Pattinson will soon be strapping himself into the batmobile and taking over the iconic role. Until then, we can swoon at photos of him with his stunt double from the first franchise he led.
Even though these two don’t look similar, they clearly got the job done on the Twilight films. Do you think Pattinson will be partnering up with his double again for next year’s Batman film? We bet he hopes so!
If you thought one Harley Quinn was bad, try having two! In 2016, Margot Robbie appeared in Suicide Squad as the cute-yet-deadily sidekick to Jared Leto’s Joker. While the film was largely panned by critics and fans, audiences were quick to fall in love with Robbie’s performance.
Well, we can ‘exclusively’ reveal that Robbie had a stunt double for some of the more physically demanding roles. Ingrid Klenig is known to perform some of the most incredible stunts seen in films. To date, she has doubled up on films like Suicide Squad, Justice League, and Mad Max: Fury Road.
